Hey everyone,
Thanks again to the playtest team for testing 0.27.0 and for all the reports, videos and saves. This is a big one (when is it not in this game?). Everyone in the world has a new, more detailed look, and you can finally choose your hair. Fortress has been rebuilt for Early Access, so a new colony starts somewhere with water and the colony goals walk you from your first well through to Frost and beyond. There's also a long list of fixes from your reports.
Tim
New characters4
- Everyone is drawn with the new detailed characters, in the world, the inventory, portraits and dialogue. If you'd rather have the original sprites, turn off Detailed characters in Settings, Gameplay, Character and HUD.
- Sleepers lie on their beds under a blanket with their head on the pillow, and bedrolls lie flat in 2.5D and first person.
- People sit in chairs, tread water and stroke when they swim, face the float when they fish and kneel at a lock they're picking.
- The figures on the title menu are the new characters too. The New Game traveller walks east and every few strides jogs, sneaks, hops, forages or turns to greet you.
Character creation6
- The creation screen puts your character first. There are 24 hairstyles, 16 hair colours and a mixer for any colour you like, and Roll a look picks one for you.
- The HAIR FROM row jumps between each origin's styles, so any style is only a few presses away.
- Your character breathes, turns all the way round, shows off their origin's move with their own weapon and does a little hop.
- Your starting kit is shown as pictures. Hover over one, or move to it on a controller, to see what it is.
- Show headgear sits beside the head slot in your inventory, or press Shift+M, so you can show off your hair without taking your hat off. A hidden hat still gives its stats, and co-op partners see what you see.
- Hairstyles show with Detailed characters off too.
Fortress7
- Fortress has been rebuilt for Early Access. Most of this reaches colonies you begin with Start your colony in 0.28.0. A colony from an older save keeps its old rules and its guided tutorial.
- Start your colony picks a site with lasting fresh water, or rock to build a well from, so a new colony doesn't die of thirst in its first week.
- You begin with three settlers, and the founding screen still offers a larger party of seven.
- Your party arrives with packed supplies instead of ready-made buildings, and the game starts paused so you can look around and plan.
- A party bound for a dry or rocky site packs extra stone, and the founding screen warns you when the only water nearby is a small pond that will run dry.
- The step-by-step tutorial makes way for short First evening help and the colony goals.danekjovaxutc5rubberychicken
- Coal and copper seams lie close to every new camp, and Prospect, in Plan's Orders tab or on Shift+P, shows every seam within 5 tiles.
Fortress goals and alerts9
- Colony goals walk you from fresh water to a hot meal, a harvest, beds, a roof, food for Frost, the herd, digging, ore, smelting and arms. Each goal has a button that opens the right tool, and Hide goals and hints puts them away.
- Goals point at the next real step. They tell you the wheat is growing and when it will ripen, ask for timber or stone when a plan is waiting on it, ask you to Make room to store goods when the stores fill up, and find a newcomer a bed in the sleeping room you already have.
- "Frost is coming" shows three days ahead when Frost would hurt the colony, and an animal in the cold gets its own alert, like "Clover is freezing".
- A new alert names any settler cut off from the colony's food or water, and Go to it takes you to them.
- Low water warnings lead you straight to the Well.
- Go to it on a dig job lands on the right level after a reload, storage alerts name the good with nowhere to go, and one trance brings one notice.trespiratesque
- Inviting a traveller clears their arrival alert.trespiratesque
- The pause sound plays when the colony pauses itself for an alert.trespiratesque
- Read on a raid letter opens the letter, and Locate finds the raider.
Fortress water, food and Frost7
- A thirsty settler drinks at a nearby fresh bank, the same as the goat does.
- A garden keeps growing wheat after every harvest until you pause it.
- Ripe wheat waits out a heat haze for a good while before it withers.
- A garden out of seed tells you that caravans sell wheat seed.
- A traveller waits out Frost unless your stores can feed one more mouth, and their card tells you how much food that takes.
- When Frost is two weeks away and food is short, Store food for Frost jumps ahead of beds and the roof.
- Settlers carry stone to a kitchen or plan that's waiting for it, clear piles off a well, and carry the harvest off the garden.
Fortress building and planning6
- Planning happens on the map. Plan shows what a building costs, you mark where it goes and press Build, and the materials are set aside when you mark it and handed back if you cancel.
- Closing in a small room queues its roof, and inspecting a room shows how much of it is roofed and sheltered.
- Floors can go under furniture.
- Nothing can be built on top of the camp store. In testing, a wall around it starved a whole colony with full shelves.
- Revealed minerals in Territory lists one row per seam, with how big it is, how far, which way and which level.
- You can prepare a caravan, found a second colony, and send deliveries back and forth between your colonies.
Fortress panels and controls11
- Clicking the empty top bar hands the keys back to the map.trespiratesque
- Find and Supplies searches close with one press of Escape.rubberychicken
- Key letters stay inside their boxes at Large and Extra large text, bar labels and section names keep their words whole, and Settlers tabs drop to two columns before they cut off a name.rubberychicken
- Skills, care, morale, relationships, wellbeing, Deep aging, Trade standing and Food planning read as small tables instead of long paragraphs, and Medical sits with the other skills.rubberychicken
- Each colony log line has the hour as well as the day.rubberychicken
- Pressing a zoom button always changes the view.rubberychicken
- Work rows name the goods being hauled and use the full width for names.trespiratesquerubberychicken
- Buttons on the bottom bar no longer cover the Paused line.
- Trade shows Colony gold and Visitor gold separately.trespiratesque
- Collect craft tools says why it's greyed out.rubberychicken
- Export saves a file named after the colony and the day, and on a Steam Deck it goes to the reports folder.
Fortress settlers and animals5
- Settlers no longer slide along the ground lying down on their way to and from bed.datsheeptho
- New goats and cows get farmyard names like Clover and Bramble, without the numbers.rubberychicken
- Animals only head for water they can actually reach, and every raider comes by a route it can actually walk.
- A settler's death gets its own named notice and pauses the game.
- Comfort settings reach Fortress too.
Dungeons7
- Auto-explore, click-to-walk and the stairs walk through shut dungeon doors and open them on the way. They used to say there was no path..knifee
- Barrels in a new world's dungeons can be searched..knifee
- Levers don't say "(searched)" when you hover over them any more..knifee
- When you leave a floor, its spare keys are set down by the stairs, ready for when you come back..knifee
- You can jam a pressure plate you've spotted. Stand next to it and press C, the controller's LT or click it, and it takes one turn..knifee
- Wells are a rare find in a new world's dungeons now, one a floor at most. Bring water..knifee
- When auto-explore runs out of floor, it tells you which locked door or lowered portcullis the rest is behind, and which way to go.
Combat9
- Your own clouds and bursts are named in the combat log. A Magma Cloud ticking on a boss used to read as "You hit" straight after your arrow missed.danekjovaxutc5
- The Vampire Lord and the other bosses who see through sneaking can't find you through walls any more. Crouching was actually making it easier for them.danekjovaxutc5
- Grey Legionaries raise the alarm, raiders whistle for their friends and jackals howl. Everything used to screech.thesquirrel_74982
- Repeated drops are counted, like "Vampiric Fang x2".danekjovaxutc5
- Pets and hired soldiers get burned by fire, braziers and lava like you do. The Flame Salamander, Fire Phoenix and Ember Drake are fireproof, and their cards say so.thesquirrel_74982
- F and Tab only aim at hostiles, so they stop telling you to shoot your escort.thesquirrel_74982
- "Barely a bite" only shows up when the blow really did barely bite.danekjovaxutc5
- The detailed log names the buff, like "You: Damage up" where it said "You: BUFF".nalathnidragon
- Heals, cleanses and wards work on guards, townsfolk and farm animals.nalathnidragon
Spells3
- Modular spell wheels show what they do, with their form in their school's colour and a badge for their status. You can name them from the pack or the belt.nalathnidragon
- Rerolling at the Long Affinage deals you cards you haven't seen, where it kept dealing the same three. It also won't take your gold if it can't reroll.arkhaven
- R or the controller's Y rerolls terroir cards and the Long Affinage bench.
Quests and towns13
- Quest givers don't ask you to fetch something they sell themselves..knifee
- The notice board lists everyone with a quest for you, including the priest across the village you haven't met yet..knifeesamv123
- Each settlement has one keeper of the tradition ceremony, so scholars, healers, alchemists and herbalists send you out to dungeons and places again..knifeesamv123
- Deliveries, escorts and errands pay more the further you have to go, and the offer says what the pay is for.samv123.knifee
- Quests to investigate or clear somewhere nearby turn up more often..knifeesamv123
- You can scroll the notice board with the arrow keys and the D-pad..knifeesamv123danekjovaxutc5
- The standing meter on the board and your character sheet shows what the settlement has granted you, and says the main story doesn't use it up.danekjovaxutc5
- The town congratulates you on your new baby instead of gossiping about it to your face, and nobody tells you news they're part of. Names keep their capital letters, and the priest follows the same manners.elfietheesp55danekjovaxutc5
- You can ask anyone the way to any service. If the town hasn't got one, they tell you so in their own words and where to find one.danekjovaxutc5
- When a town starts calling you something, like the Matchmaker, the log tells you what you did to earn it and the Legend lists it.thesquirrel_74982
- The Legend says where each honour came from, and V or the controller's View button opens it.thesquirrel_74982
- Towns sitting next to a highway with no road in now get one.danekjovaxutc5
- You can take down a well or anything else you built inside a town.palpablebrush26
Village tutors7
- You can walk past a village tutor like anyone else. Bumping into one only opens their talk when they have something new to say.tthfrynalathnidragon.knifee
- A dialogue box doesn't eat the key that opened it, and closing one doesn't click the menu underneath.
- Drillmasters now say what their lesson wants, a blow on the straw dummy.trespiratesque
- The stealth tutor names the sneak key you actually use, and warns you about creeping around people's homes.
- The Cook hands you milk and wheat for the cooking lesson, so you make a real Milk Porridge.
- Build lessons count a vat, plot, bench or bed you already have.palpablebrush26
- The Herder's goat stays put at the pen, and the Herder tells you how to keep her safe.trespiratesque
Items and trading15
- Every ingredient shows how many you have against how many it takes, like "bear hide 17/3", at the bench, the press, the cooking pot and in the recipe book.nalathnidragon
- Tooltips say how many you have, on shop rows, recipe results and chests.danekjovaxutc5
- Swap or fill your water belt from the belt itself, the same way as food.danekjovaxutc5
- You can identify an item from a trader's Sell list with an Affineur's Nose.danekjovaxutc5
- A cursed card explains its numbers. The stats shown already include the curse and the bargain, and each stat tells you its share.danekjovaxutc5
- Every bigger bag is on the shelf at its own price, and you can buy whichever one you can afford. The Rucksack used to stay locked even for someone holding 199,885 gold.rubberychicken
- The mail screen's warnings are one chip now, and each item you can't send says why on its own row.rubberychicken
- The Gilded Idol has a SELL chip and says who'll buy it..knifee
- The forge's recipes fold into groups like Weapons and armour, Tools and fishing, and Ammunition, with how many of each you can make.danekjovaxutc5
- Tame shows which bait it will use and your chance of success.nalathnidragon
- A hand of Wheels of War takes some time to play, and a cellarer you've beaten will sit down for a friendly hand..knifee
- New community art for the raft, the waterskin, the culture and the six kinds of wood.arkhaven
- Take some takes the amount it shows, not the whole stack.tthfry
- Amount prompts move one at a time with the arrow keys, not two.
- Changing the pack's category filter no longer leaves the item card describing something you can't see.
Building and the homestead9
- Build mode shows the whole build area at once. Green is where the piece can go, dimmed is ground that won't take it, orange is where the town won't allow it, and the tile under your cursor says why.danekjovaxutc5
- Plant Tree shows which seed it will sow and how many you have left.danekjovaxutc5
- Fences, gates, wire fences, signs and mailboxes can go on paths.danekjovaxutc5
- Scroll the build menu's bars with the mouse wheel.danekjovaxutc5
- The seed menu keeps its order and puts you on the last seed you sowed. That seed used to jump to the top, which made another one look like it had vanished..knifee
- A burnt or demolished bridge or dock leaves the water it stood on. No more lawns in the middle of the lake.thesquirrel_74982
- Traps leave the ground they were laid on when they go off or are taken down.
- The Livestock panel and an animal's right-click card say why it isn't breeding.thesquirrel_74982
- Ctrl+G turns Bump to gather on and off.palpablebrush26
Travel and the world10
- Clicking a far tile walks you there the fastest way, using roads and trails like auto-travel does. A 30-tile walk that took 28 turns takes 15.danekjovaxutc5
- Scouts fly home to wherever you are now, not where you were when you sent them.danekjovaxutc5
- Rafts and skiffs can launch onto a shallow river from the bank and ride the current downstream, and click-to-walk keeps you on the water..knifeepalpablebrush26trespiratesque
- Long travel on a raft or skiff tells you to steer it yourself, instead of sending you to a helm it doesn't have.
- Autumn looks like autumn. Pines and palms stay green, maples go scarlet and orange, oaks russet and birches gold.thesquirrel_74982
- Names on the world map grow as you zoom in, and the mouse wheel scrolls the Waypoints list.danekjovaxutc5
- Keep the danger level on screen, in Settings, Gameplay, Character and HUD, shows the danger level outside towns all the time. Customize HUD has the same switch.samv123
- Your health bar stays in front of the tree north of you.palpablebrush26
- Only a building's outside doors show through its roof..knifee
- Wedge Hats face the right way round.urughakdanekjovaxutc5
Co-op5
- A co-op host who pressed Ctrl and a number pad key with NumLock on could see "Now steering P2" and lose their pack. That can't happen now, and Ctrl with the number pad steps you like it should.danekjovaxutc5
- Guests see the same townsfolk the host does.danekjovaxutc5
- Drinking several potions in strict co-op takes one turn, not one turn per potion.danekjovaxutc5
- Give to a partner standing beside you from their menu, gold or anything in your pack.danekjovaxutc5
- The log tells you when you walk out of your partner's turn bubble and when you're back in it.danekjovaxutc5
Controller and Steam Deck5
- A Steam Controller set as the Deck's main controller should work now. Let me know if yours still doesn't.tthfry
- LB and RB turn the pages of the affineur's bench.tthfry
- The controller's build menu wraps around both ways, lists every material a build takes and shows whether you can afford it.tthfry
- The build wheel answers a flick at any angle and the D-pad, and opening it stops auto-travel.tthfry
- Your first bow or crossbow brings up the Ranged Combat tip, worded for the controller or the keys you're using.tthfry
Settings and stability8
- If Mute is on, the game stays quiet from the moment it starts.trespiratesque
- Scroll-zooming with a frame rate cap or Low-power mode on no longer flickers the old picture.palpablebrush26
- No more red spellcheck squiggles under text fields.rubberychicken
- Classic runs carry a PERMADEATH chip, with "One life. Death ends the save." next to Begin.arkhaventthfry
- On a Mac, the Classic font draws crisp.
- Going back to the title screen frees the memory a long session built up, and closing the world map frees its own.danekjovaxutc5
- Saving a report opens in the folder you used last, and if it can't save, it says why.danekjovaxutc5
- If Alt+Tab on Windows fills up with Roguefort entries, try adding --direct-composition to the game's launch options in Steam and let me know how it goes.trespiratesque
